What are brain injuries?

Brain injuries are caused by any unexpected external force, illness or disease that damages the brain. This includes any bump or jolt of the head that causes the brain to bounce and twist in the skull. It also includes a penetrating brain injury like a gunshot wound.

Brain injuries are common and can lead to short- or long-term health problems. The injury’s severity determines the degree of disability, potentially affecting thinking, mobility, and communication.

Delaware NeuroRehab is a group medical practice specializing in treating brain injuries. The interdisciplinary team works together to create comprehensive programs that address every need for recovery.

What causes brain injuries?

Any injury or illness can cause a brain injury. These are called acquired brain injuries and include:

Stroke

A stroke occurs when there’s a disruption in blood flow to the brain, preventing the delivery of oxygen to the brain cells. Without oxygen, brain cells die, leading to brain damage.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI)

A TBI refers to any head injury that affects how the brain works. A conclusion is a TBI.

Anoxic or hypoxic brain injuries

Anoxic brain injuries occur when there’s a complete lack of oxygen to the brain, resulting in brain damage. A hypoxic brain injury occurs when there’s a reduction in oxygen-rich blood to the brain.

Stroke, toxic anoxia (poison), and anoxic anoxia (suffocation) are anoxic and hypoxic brain injuries.

Brain tumors, brain infections, and vascular malformations in the brain (aneurysms) can also cause an acquired brain injury. Cancer that metastasizes to the brain can also cause a brain injury.
